OVERVIEW

Zoom Page allows a web page or image to be viewed larger or smaller than normal, using a multi-function button that can be placed on any tool bar. The current zoom level is displayed as a percentage and the zoom level can be manually changed using two buttons (plus & minus), or using the popup zoom menu, or using Firefox's standard zoom shortcuts.

Zoom Page provides four zoom modes (Default, Fit-To-Width, Default + Site-Specific and Fit-To-Width + Site-Specific) and two image zoom modes (Default and Fit-To-Window), which automatically set the zoom level when new tabs are opened, web pages are loaded, tabs are selected or the browser window is resized. In the site-specfic zoom modes, both the zoom level and zoom type (Full-Page or Text-Only) are remembered for each site.

On initial installation, the zoom mode is set to Default + Site-Specific and the image zoom mode is set to Fit-To-Window.

Summary of toolbar button actions:
    • Plus → click → Zoom In
    • Minus → click →   Zoom Out
    • Percentage → middle-click → Zoom Reset
    • Percentage → click → Zoom Menu → click → Set Zoom Level
    • Percentage → click → Zoom Menu → middle-click → Set default zoom level
    • Percentage → click → Zoom Menu → shift+click → Set text minimum zoom level
    • Percentage → shift+click → Default % or Fit-To-Width (depending on zoom mode)
    • Percentage → right-click → Full-Page or Text-Only

In all cases, Ctrl+click can be used instead of middle-click.

GETTING STARTED

After installing Zoom Page, the Zoom Page toolbar button is automatically displayed in the Navigation Toolbar.

USER REFERENCE

Using The Toolbar Button

The current zoom level can be changed by clicking on the plus and minus buttons, or by clicking on the percentage display to show the popup Zoom Menu and then clicking on one of percentage zoom levels (the default zoom level is shown in black bold font and the text minimum zoom level is shown in red bold font). On the Zoom Menu there are two special icons, one for applying Fit-To-Width or Fit-To-Window zoom, and the other for accessing the Options dialog.

The zoom mode can be changed from the Zoom Menu by hovering the mouse over the submenu icon to bring up the Zoom Mode submenu, and then selecting one of the zoom modes (the current zoom mode is shown in bold font).

The current zoom type can be switched between Full-Page and Text-Only by right-clicking on the percentage display.

The current zoom level can be reset to the default zoom level or to fit-to-width/window (depending on the Zoom Mode) by middle-clicking on the percentage display. Note, this also removes site specific zoom level/type from the current site.

The current zoom level can be set to the default zoom level or to fit-to-width/window (depending on the Zoom Mode) by Shift+clicking on the percentage display.

The default zoom level can be changed from the Zoom Menu by middle-clicking on one of the percentage zoom levels.

The text minimum zoom level can be changed from the Zoom Menu by Shift+clicking on one of the percentage zoom levels. The text minimum zoom level determines the minimum zoom level applied to text elements when using Full-Page zoom.

The default zoom type or default fit-to-window type can be changed from the Zoom Menu by hovering the mouse over the submenu icon to bring up the Zoom Mode submenu, and then middle-clicking on the zoom type or fit-to-window type.

The Zoom Page toolbar button can be added/moved to any of the toolbars: Menu Bar, Navigation Toolbar, Bookmark Toolbar, Tabs Toolbar or Add-on Bar (which replaced the Status Bar). This is done by right-clicking on a toolbar, selecting Customize, and dragging the Zoom Page toolbar button onto one of the toolbars.

In all cases, Ctrl+click can be used instead of middle-click.

Page Zoom Modes

When viewing normal web pages, there are four different modes of operation:

    • Default
    • Fit-To-Width
    • Default + Site Specific
    • Fit-To-Width + Site Specific

In each mode, the zoom level and zoom type are automatically updated as required when web pages are loaded, tabs are selected or the browser is resized.

There are options to set a Text Minimum Zoom Level and to set a zoom level of 100% for special pages (audio, video, about: and xul).

Default

Applies the default zoom level and default zoom type when a new tab is opened. Zoom Reset will re-apply the default zoom level/type.

This mode is similar to Firefox's basic zoom method (available when browser.zoom.siteSpecific is false), except that the default zoom level/type can be configured and the zoom type is remembered for each tab.

Note, after viewing a special page or a standalone image, the previous zoom level is re-applied.

Fit-To-Width

Applies a fit-to-width zoom level and the default zoom type when a web page is loaded or the browser is resized. The calculated zoom level is the largest zoom level that will allow the web page to be displayed without a horizontal scroll bar appearing. The calculated zoom level is restricted to a range defined by minimum and maximum zoom levels. Zoom Reset will re-apply a fit-to-width zoom level and full-page zoom type.

There are two maximum zoom levels, one for when the browser window is half screen width or less, the other for when the browser window is full screen width. When the browser window is between half screen width and full screen width, an intermediate maximum zoom level is calculated from the two defined maximum zoom levels.

Note, Fit-To-Width zoom often has little effect when the zoom type is Text-Only. See the Page Zoom Types section below.

Default + Site Specific

Applies the default zoom level/type when a web page is loaded or a tab is selected, unless a site specific zoom level/type has been remembered. If the zoom level/type is changed, the new zoom level/type is remembered as the site specific zoom level/type and is applied to all web pages subsequently loaded from that site. Zoom Reset will re-apply the default zoom level/type and forget the site specific zoom level/type.

This mode is similar to Firefox's site-specific zoom method (available when browser.zoom.siteSpecific is true), except that the default zoom level/type can be configured.

Fit-To-Width + Site Specific

Applies a fit-to-width zoom level and the default zoom type when a web page is loaded or a tab is selected or the browser is resized, unless a site specific zoom level/type has been remembered. If the zoom level/type is changed, the new zoom level/type is remembered as the site specific zoom level/type and is applied to all web pages subsequently loaded from that site. Zoom Reset will re-apply a fit-to-width zoom level and full-page zoom type, and forget the site specific zoom level/type.

Page Zoom Types

In all four page zoom modes, the zoom type can be set to Full-Page or Text-Only:

    • Full-Page - zooms both the text and graphics
    • Text-Only - zooms just the text (graphics remain at 100%)

The results of Fit-To-Width zoom may be unpredictable when the zoom type is Text-Only. This is because the width of a web page is nearly always determined by the width of the graphics elements, not the width of the text elements. Within a text element, the text usually flows freely and wraps around, and so the width of a text element is often unaffected by changes to the text size (zoom level).

The Text Minimum Zoom Level is only applied to text elements when using Full-Page zoom, not when using Text-Only zoom.

Image Zoom Modes

When viewing single images, there are two different modes of operation:

    • Default
    • Fit-To-Window

In each mode, the zoom level is automatically updated as required when images are loaded, tabs are selected or the browser is resized.

The minimum and maximum zoom levels can be set to any of the values in the current set of zoom levels or to one of the built-in values (1%, 10%, 1000% or 10000%).

Default

Applies the default zoom level when an image is loaded. Zoom Reset will re-apply the default zoom level.

This mode differs from Firefox's standard image zoom method, in that the default zoom level can be configured and fit-to-window zoom is not applied automatically.

Clicking on the image with the magnifying glass cursor applies either Default Zoom if not already applied, or Fit-To-Window using the default fit-to-window type otherwise.

Fit-To-Window

Applies a calculated zoom level when an image is loaded or the browser is resized. The calculated zoom level is the largest zoom level that will allow the web page to be displayed without horizontal and/or vertical scroll bars appearing, depending on the default fit-to-window type. The calculated zoom level is restricted to a range defined by minimum and maximum zoom levels. Zoom Reset will re-apply a fit-to-window zoom level.

This mode differs from Firefox's standard image zoom method, in that fit-to-window is applied when an image is first loaded and is applied whether or not the browser window is larger than the normal-sized image.

Clicking on the image with the magnifying glass cursor applies either Fit-To-Window if not already applied or Default Zoom otherwise.

Image Zoom Types

In the Fit-To-Window zoom mode, the fit-to-window type can be set to 1D or 2D:

    • 1D - fits to width or height (one scroll bar) - good for panoramas
    • 2D - fits to width and height (no scroll bars) - displays entire image

Zoom Levels

The current set of zoom levels can be chosen from seven pre-defined sets or a user-defined custom set. The pre-defined sets of zoom levels allow zoom levels of 25%-500%.

The custom set of zoom levels is a hyphen-separated list of zoom level percentages, which can edited multiple times before being made active. The custom zoom levels (1% to 10000%) can be entered in any order (without % signs) and can be validated by clicking on the Validate button. This will correctly order the zoom levels and add a 100 zoom level if it is missing. The custom zoom levels can be initialized to current set of zoom levels by clicking on the Copy button. The custom zoom levels can be made active by clicking on the Update button.

The default zoom level can be chosen from the current set of zoom levels.

The text minimum zoom level can be chosen from the current set of zoom levels and determines the minimum zoom level applied to text elements when using Full-Page zoom.

The fit-to-width minimum and maximum zoom levels for normal page zoom can be chosen from the current set of zoom levels. The minimum zoom level must be less than or equal to the default zoom level. The maximum zoom level for less than half screen windows must be greater than or equal to the default zoom level. The maximum zoom level for full screen windows must be greater than or equal to the maximum zoom level for less than half screen windows.

The fit-to-window minimum and maximum zoom levels for image zoom can be chosen from the current set of zoom levels (the minimum may also be set to 1% or 10% and the maximum may also be set to 1000% or 10000%). The minimum zoom level must be less than or equal to the default zoom level. The maximum zoom level must be greater than or equal to the default zoom level.

Image Position

When viewing images, the image position can be chosen from the following options:

    • Origin - image is displayed in top left of browser window.
    • Origin & Margin - image is displayed in top left of browser window with a small margin.
    • Center - image is displayed in center of browser window.
    • Center & Margin - image is displayed in center of browser window with a small margin.

Image Background

When viewing images, the image background can be chosen from the following options:

    • White - white background.
    • Dark - dark grey background.
    • Plain - plain color background.
    • Grid - plain color with light grey 10/50/100 pixel grid lines.
    • Checker - plain color and light grey 10 pixel checkerboard squares.

The plain color Around the image can be configured by entering a hexadecimal color value (#rrggbb). In case the image is transparent, the color Behind the image can also be configured by entering a hexadecimal color value (#rrggbb).

Button Style

The toolbar button style can be chosen from one of five layouts:

    • Classic - magnifying glass icons.
    • Normal - plus/minus icons.
    • Small - plus/minus icons.
    • Tiny - plus/minus icons.

Button Colors

The toolbar button plus/minus icons and indicator borders can be colored dark grey or light grey. By default, the colors are set automatically depending on whether the theme is light or dark.

The toolbar button colors can be chosen from one of four options:

    • Automatic - automatically set colors.
    • Change icons - change plus/minus icon color to other color.
    • Change borders - change indicator borders color to other color.
    • Change both - change both icon and border colors to other colors.

Button Actions

There is an option to swap the mouse clicks (click or middle-click) on the percentage display that are required to show the Zoom Menu or perform Zoom Rest.

There is an option to use a zoom step (1%-100&), instead of the next pre-defined zoom level, when zooming in or out using the +/- buttons or the Ctrl + +, Ctrl + - ans Ctrl + MouseWheel shortcuts.

Display Indicators

The display indicators are designed to provide more information about the currently applied zoom level. The indicators appear beside or around the zoom level percentage display and take the form of letter prefixes, percentage suffix, different style borders or different style text. There are options to enable each of the indicators.
